The metrics that matter most are qualified conversations, website visits, profile actions, and booked work influenced by social content. Views and followers can help explain reach, but they aren't business results by themselves.
Separate attention from intent
A view tells you that content was displayed or watched according to a platform's rules. A save, reply, profile visit, website click, or direct message shows more interest. A qualified estimate request is closer to the result a service company needs.
Don't combine unlike numbers into one engagement score. A three-second video view, a YouTube watch, and a website visit describe different actions. Keep the original platform definitions and compare similar content over the same period.
Start each report with a decision
Before adding a chart, ask what you will do with it. If the decision is which topic to repeat, compare saves, useful replies, search discovery, and website activity by topic. If the decision is staffing replies, look at message volume and response time.
A report that says followers increased 8 percent but recommends nothing is decoration. A report that says drainage-explanation posts brought several relevant profile visits and two estimate conversations gives the owner something to test again.
An illustrative landscaper report
Suppose a landscaper posts a finished patio video that gets many views and a short drainage explanation that gets fewer views. The drainage post earns saves, two detailed messages from nearby homeowners, and visits to the drainage-service page. The patio video earns broad attention but no local inquiry the company can identify.
That doesn't make the patio post useless. It may build familiarity. It does suggest that practical drainage content deserves another test, perhaps with a stronger link to the related service page.
Accept that attribution has gaps
People send posts to family members, remember a company for months, call instead of clicking, or move between devices. Tracking links can distinguish some campaign visits, and asking new leads how they found you can add context. Neither method captures every influence.
Google's Search Console platform properties add another useful view for supported Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube accounts. They can show clicks, impressions, queries, and posts discovered through Google Search and Discover. They don't replace website tracking or prove that each impression became a lead. See the guide to Search Console platform properties for social and video for more detail.
Use a small monthly scorecard
- Qualified messages and conversations.
- Website visits and important actions from tagged links.
- Profile visits, calls, or direction actions when relevant.
- Saves, shares, useful replies, and search visibility by content theme.
- Response time and any unanswered customer inquiries.
Add lead quality to the review. Ten messages from people outside the service area may create more activity than one well-matched kitchen-remodel inquiry, but they don't create more value. Record which conversations fit the service, geography, timing, and job size the company can handle.
Keep raw counts beside rates. A high response rate based on four messages needs different interpretation from the same rate based on forty. Note outages, promotions, unusual weather, or one widely shared post so the next comparison has context.
Save the reporting definitions with the numbers. Platforms change labels and calculations, and next quarter's reviewer should know what each metric meant when it was recorded.
End with one of five decisions: continue, revise, repurpose, test, or stop. TechDad's social media support keeps reporting tied to those decisions. Build the larger picture with the quarterly online visibility scorecard. If your dashboard is full of numbers but light on answers, a free strategy call can help simplify it.
